Government departments' hands are tied in the fight against price increases by telecom companies

Telecommunications companies such as Telia increased their profits by several million euros over the year, despite increasingly high service prices. Although raising prices to increase profits is a concern for consumers, neither the Competition Authority nor the Consumer Protection Authority sees a problem with the companies' actions.

Telia Eesti's net profit for the year increased by 8.7 million euros.

Director General of the Competition Authority Evelin Pärn-Liy said that the agency's hands are tied.

“In an oligopoly market, it is more profitable for market participants to monitor each other's actions than to compete, because if they competed, they would all lose,” she explained.

An oligopoly market is a situation where there are many people interested in a product or service, but few offers.

Telia Chairman Holger Haljand said earlier this year that the price increase was necessary because ever-increasing data volumes meant the network required more and more investment.
