Germany: Fines and criminal charges for farmers protesting at Green rally

Niemcy: Grzywny i zarzuty karne dla rolników protestujących na wiecu Zielonych

The farmers arrived in Biberach on February 14 after learning that Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir was coming to the annual Ash Wednesday rally of the Greens. The initially peaceful picket turned into clashes with the police, who used batons and tear gas. The farmers, in turn, threw stones at government limousines. Several people were slightly injured. The Greens interrupted their rally.

During the demonstration, the police detained only one farmer, who was released after his identity was established. Now, however, it turns out that the authorities did not forget the incident at all. The prosecutor's office is pursuing and punishing the rebellious farmers.

The Big Investigation

According to Agrarheute, the Ravensburg prosecutor's office has filed a motion to punish 42 participants of that protest, and in 14 cases criminal charges have been brought against farmers. It turns out that the Ulm police department began a wide-ranging investigation immediately after the end of the farmers' protest. For this purpose, a 20-person investigation group was formed under the supervision of the State Security Service. Recordings from numerous cameras and drones were used to identify the farmers now accused.

Charges against farmers

The prosecutor's charges against a dozen or so farmers mainly include coercion, insults, destruction of property and disturbing the peace. Some were charged with bodily harm, attempted grievous bodily harm, resistance and physical assault on law enforcement officers. Additionally, the demonstrators are accused of "using symbols of unconstitutional and terrorist organizations."

Whitewashed police

The protesters complained in the media that they had been provoked by police officers who wanted to break up their picket at all costs. A video recording also documented a police officer punching a protester twice. The prosecutor's office opened an investigation against the police officers, but it was dropped. The protesters also pointed to the involvement of provocateurs who were not farmers, but this thread was apparently not pursued either.

Salty Fines

As we read, a significant number of the accused voluntarily agreed to submit to fines, which can even amount to several thousand euros. In 25 cases, however, the accused rejected the charges. The courts will decide on their guilt or innocence. Even those farmers who agreed to pay the fine say that they do not feel guilty and did not behave aggressively. Everyone criticizes the prosecutor's office for "whitewashing" the police and not looking for the provocateurs who were actually responsible for the riot. The German Farmers' Union immediately distanced itself from the protest in Biberach.
