In contrast to German producers, the Italian agricultural association Coldiretti is calling for the abolition of preventive slaughter of domestic pigs in areas threatened by the plague. In their opinion, the culling of healthy herds just because someone found the carcass of a sick wild boar a few kilo[1] meters away has no justification and is only a cause of measurable losses for farmers.
Italians protest against preventive slaughter
As ZPM experts remind us, in July this year, over 50,000 farmers protested against this approach. Representatives of the association believe that instead of tightening the measures against breeders, the authorities should deal with solving the problem of the excessive population of wild boars, which are the dominant factor in the spread of ASF in Italy.
Germany increases bonus for shooting wild boars
ZPM also reminds that the authorities of the German state of Brandenburg have decided to increase the premium for shooting wild boars in areas threatened by ASF.
The fee for shooting wild boar will be applicable in the 2024/2025 hunting season in all counties that are covered by zones with restrictions resulting from ASF. The aim of the campaign is to radically reduce the number of wild boars that can spread the disease. What's more, hunters who deliver hunted wild boars to the appropriate collection points can also count on a premium, even if they are not suitable for sale, although in such a case the fee will be fifty euros instead of one hundred – we read in the ZPM announcement.
