Austrian and German media report on an unusual campaign initiated by an Austrian cattle breeder from Styria. The farmer is trying to appeal to the imagination of dog owners who allow their pets to relieve themselves in his meadows and do not clean up the excrement. Due to bacteria and parasites from the breeder's dog excrement, 4 cows and 2 calves have died, and 5 pregnant cows have miscarried.
Dogs relieve themselves in the breeder's meadow
As reported by MeinBezirk.at, the farmer produces organic milk and has 10 hectares of meadows outside the city, from which he harvests hay for cattle. Unfortunately, a walking path runs along the meadows, especially popular with dog owners. Although the city has placed bins and even containers with bags for animal excrement along the path, the farmer comes across dozens of dog poops on his land every day.
Dog parasite kills cows
He doesn't manage to find and clean up all of them, so the remains of the excrement are later found in the hay fed to the cows. The bacteria and parasites contained in dog poop are very harmful to cattle. The parasite Neospora caninum, which causes abortions in cows, is particularly dangerous. Research on the farm of a breeder from Styria confirmed that dog excrement in the feed is to blame for the falls and abortions.
Photos on poles
The farmer wants to make dog owners aware of the threat they pose to other animals by letting their four-legged friends off leash in the meadows and not cleaning up their droppings. He has launched a campaign on social media to raise awareness of the issue. He also displays photos of his dead cows and the effects of their miscarriages on poles along his meadows, and puts up signs with appeals to dog owners.
