If the price of electricity is already several hundred euros per megawatt-hour, then the power plants that we have in the Baltics should also work, especially gas power plants, said former Chairman of the Board of Eesti Energia and former Regional Head of the Baltics and Russia at Nord Pool Hando Sutter.
Commenting on the price of electricity, Sutter said that it is indeed very high: very expensive in absolute terms and expensive for the summer, ERR writes.
"The fact that the price in August was five times higher than in Finland is a disaster. We are all talking here about the competitiveness of the Estonian economy – it is very difficult to compete when such an important resource as electricity is five times cheaper on the neighbouring market," Sutter said.
"It's too easy to just say that Estlink 2 is broken and once it's fixed everything will be fine," Sutter says.
"We still need to think about why we can't produce electricity here at a reasonable price," he added.
