Forest Supper Club – a way to success for Lubusz farmers

And there is no shortage of volunteers, even though before you can sit down to feast (vegetarian dishes are cooked on site by Jakub), you have to go through quite a forest-river adventure, which Magda serves.

– The idea of a supper club is not new, but known mainly in cities. We met Jakub, who was working in a vegan restaurant at the time, in Warsaw and there we wanted to first develop our idea of organizing dinners in various interesting or unusual places, such as a roof (pop-up restaurant). But we failed to develop our idea in the capital. So we decided to make a radical change in our lives and came to Jakub's hometown, i.e. in the Lubuskie Voivodeship. We moved in March, and in May we organized our first dinner – recalls Magda.

The partners live permanently near Zielona Góra, but they spend weekends and entire holidays in the forest village of Zamęt on the Pliszka River.

The first dinner took place in the nearby town of Kosobudki, at the local Creative Activity Spot.

– Who will come to this forest in Kosobudki – my father-in-law said then – Magda recalls. – If 5 or 15 arrive, it will be great – I said. And 80 of them came… I remember how we collected dishes from our neighbors, who even took out those that had been thrown into the attic a long time ago… Local residents were interested in the idea, as well as our friends from Poznań and Zielona Góra.

In the same year, the partners organized seven more dinners, each in a different place, including: in a friendly vineyard, agritourism, on galars (famous in the region galars in Cigacice nad Odrą)…

– Where do the customers come from? We opened a Facebook account and started advertising. Customers reserve seats and pay in advance – explains Magda.

A table in the middle of the forest

As Magda admits, the partners' dream was always to have dinner on a table in the middle of the forest. And this dream came true. After obtaining all necessary consents from the State Forests, the Forest Dinner Club on the Pliszka River was established.

This initiative was submitted to this year's 24th edition of the Way to Success competition, organized by the Agricultural Advisory Center in Brwinów. Farmer has been the media patron of this competition for years.

– Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, today a sensory feast awaits you at the Forest Supper Club, in the heart of the Rzepińska Forest, in a forest settlement with the magical name of Zamęt. Your journey should lead through the town of Koryta, where it is a good idea to turn off the air conditioning and open the windows. You will drive along a straight asphalt road surrounded by trees, and at the end you will turn left and cross the railway crossing in Drzewce-Kolonia. Behind the tracks, turn left, and then left again, where the wooden Zamęt sign indicates. Here, slow down completely, leave all your worries behind the bridge next to the Pliszka River waterfall. You will pass an old barn on the left, drive up slightly and park next to the table in front of a beautiful wooden barn. We'll meet there, Magda and Kuba – this is a text message to the competition jury delegation.

Magic, right?

Then it was also magical, because to the destination you had to walk through a meadow (barefoot, of course…), a forest, a steep descent and then a river over stones and mud, called by Magda the local mud…

In 2022, a consortium agreement was signed with 5 local farmers as part of the Short Food Supply Chains project (Cooperation with Rural Development Programme).

– We wanted food supplies from local residents who treat their land well. In the consortium, we have a farmer (a young guy) who provides us with great honey obtained from hives placed in the middle of the forest or on ecologically certified crops, we cooperate with Vineyard Miłosz and Mozów, we have vegetables from a farmer from Łagów, and we have fruit from a Swiss living in Poland – he runs orchards near Pszczew, although this is too much to say, because he buys old orchards in the area and simply does nothing with them, preserving them in full ecology – says Magda.

… and with the local company Biooil from Zielona Góra, which supplies vegetable oils.

The partners allocated the money from the grant obtained under the Rural Development Program, among others, to: for the purchase of a means of transport, i.e. a delivery van and the organization of a website. A kind of glass shelter is also under construction, where it will be possible to organize forest dinners even in less favorable weather conditions.

How much does a forest dinner cost?

– It started with small amounts, like "in a hat". Last year, our rate was PLN 350 per person, says Magda. – But it must be added that sometimes up to 10 people are employed to serve dinners (on the basis of activating local residents).

And it cannot be denied that the Forest Supper Club has already become famous, also thanks to several articles in the national press.

– Now Kuba has so much work that he can't get around it – admits Magda.

In addition to cooking for his own initiative, Jakub also prepares catering (mainly vegetarian) for various other events in the area (including regular yoga workshops).

It is worth adding that the consortium also sells agricultural products to farmers involved in the initiative through the website and online store: www.lesnyklubkolacyjny.com, as well as in a grocery store in Łagów Lubuski, and during culinary events, such as dinners. in the forest, educational or culinary workshops, etc. It is planned to expand sales, among others. about local crafts and artistic products. There are also plans to organize accommodation for guests (in tents, of course…).

What is also worth adding, the events themselves take place "without electricity", and therefore end when darkness slowly falls….

– It was and is not… It's great that you came. We like to do it. We hope to see you there. In small but consistent steps, we are creating this forest adventure to bring people closer to the source of the greatest luxury.
