Despite successful suppression of the disease, which has been achieved through various means of fighting, Minister of social affairs of Saxony Petra Köpping appealed to remain sensitive in the fight against ASF.
The proliferation of ASF
Proliferation of African Swine Flu (ASF) in Saxony is steadily declining. As announced by the Saxon Ministry of Social Affairs, Health and Social Cohesion (SMS), from August 2024 year. no no new cases of wildlife infected with ASF virus have been detected.
Of 2397 cases of ASF detected since the first appearance of ASF in wild in Saxony in October 2020 , only 102 are still active. This means that it was discovered less than a year ago. All other cases are considered to be eliminated in accordance with law EU and not requiring any fighting measures already.
In Saxony ASF occurs now primarily in the northern parts of Budiszyn County. Zones of exclusion exist currently only in part of Budiszyn and Görlitz districts. The area of these is currently 2978 km² for II exclusion zone (area at risk) and 1854 km² for I exclusion zone (zone buffer).
Still there is vigilance
in connection with that Saxony is obligated to implement EU law. It is necessary to to remain sensitive, to control the danger of receiving the virus, explained the minister and added, that in contrast to other union countries, in Saxony has successfully prevented the transmission of African disease to pig cultures. Even without this worst scenario the breeders of pigs are going through a very difficult period, because the sale of their products is covered by many restrictions. However thanks to extensive research it is known, that pork from Saxony has always met all hygienic food requirements.
