Flooding floods pig farm in Austria, 270 pigs die

Powódź zalała chlewnię w Austrii. Padło 270 świń

According to Agrarheute, the owner of the farm, upon being called by the emergency services, evacuated his wife, four children and 84-year-old grandmother for safety reasons. He himself intended to stay on the farm to seal the doors to the pigsty and warehouses. However, he notified the firefighters to consider his pigsty in case of danger.

However, the farm was suddenly completely flooded. The power cut caused the ventilation in the pigsty to stop working, and then water flooded the building. The pigs first suffocated and then drowned.

According to the farmer, the barn could not be reached because the water was too high and the current was very strong. When the farmer finally got into the building, 270 of the 400 pigs were dead. Several animals were injured and the vet had to put them down. The farmer had to send the remaining pigs to slaughter immediately.

-There were no warnings that the flood would be so strong – complains the 51-year-old pig farmer. As he says, the flood took his animals, destroyed the feed, the harvested grain, the tractor and the machines, but in addition to that it damaged all the expensive installations in the pigsty. The loss of the pigs alone means 100 thousand euros for him. Meanwhile, the insurer will probably not cover his losses because the farm is located in a flood zone.
