- The period immediately after harvest is generally the best time to apply lime. However, when ordering them now, pay attention to the delivery time.
- Is there a problem with the availability of lime on the market?
Last moment to order lime before sowing winter crops
When ordering lime now, you must take into account that in some cases the waiting time may be extended. This is usually an issue directly related to transport capabilities. Therefore, before ordering, please ask about the order processing time.
Some companies provide information that the delivery time for lime from the manufacturer is currently 2 – 3 weeks. This depends on the type of product ordered and the location of the lime collection point. Sometimes the waiting time is longer, even over a month. But there are also calcium fertilizers that will be available on our farms within a week of ordering.
If the order processing time is so long that you cannot afford to wait for the goods, you can buy granulated lime directly from the distributor's warehouse. Generally, there is no problem with availability, although at the moment some sales points admit that lime will be running out and they will have to wait "a while" for next deliveries.
A longer waiting time for a possible delivery of lime is nothing new at the moment. During the harvest period – as well as immediately before and immediately after the harvest – there was usually a long wait for the ordered goods. Transport is quite busy at this time, and in addition, the period of increased transport (including cereals and rapeseed) clashes with the holiday season.
There must be a break between lime and pre-sowing fertilization
However, remember to ask about the delivery time. This is important because it is ideal to apply lime some time after the application of, for example, phosphorus or multi-component fertilizers for winter cereals or rapeseed. A safe withdrawal period between lime and NPK fertilizers or those containing nitrogen in the ammonium form is 4 – 6 weeks. The necessary minimum is 2 weeks. Often, this shorter period is used in practice, and sometimes even this cannot be achieved. This was the case last year, when the harvest ended relatively late and after the cereal harvest, the fields were quickly prepared for rapeseed. So we have a similar situation as in the case of manure application, where the break between natural fertilizer and lime application is at least 2 weeks, but it would be best to be longer.
