Fatal news from Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. An outbreak of ASF in pigs deep in the province

Fatalne wieści z kujawsko-pomorskiego. Ognisko ASF świń w głębi województwa

The occurrence of another ASF outbreak is not surprising, but its location is. The disease appeared in the Chełmno commune, approximately 35 kilometers north of Toruń. The herd in which the disease was confirmed had fewer than 40 pigs.

This is the first outbreak of ASF in pigs in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, but it is not the worst. While the disease could be expected in the north-eastern corner of the region (where ASF in wild boars has already occurred), we are talking about a different part of the region, approximately 50 km away from the nearest outbreaks in wild boars.

We will continue to monitor the situation in the region.

Another swine ASF hotspot

Until recently, Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship was one of the last provinces free of ASF. The situation changed in June, when the disease in wild boars was confirmed first in Brodnica County, and later in Grudziądz County. However, it is difficult to say that we are dealing with a mass occurrence of the plague – these were rather incidental outbreaks.

Unfortunately, we are talking about a region traditionally associated with pig production. According to data from the Central Statistical Office from December 2023, over a million pigs were kept in the province, and the region itself was the third in Poland in terms of head count.

The blessing in disguise is the fact that Chełmno County itself is not characterized by a particularly large scale of production. According to ARiMR data, as of December 31 last year there were 293 herds of pigs, of which only 6 had more than 500 animals. In total, the county kept less than 15 thousand animals. However, this is poor consolation – in the neighboring Świecie County (a part of which will probably first be in the endangered area, and later in the red zone) at the end of last year there were about 650 herds of pigs keeping a total of almost 90 thousand animals.

ASF in 2024

Kujawsko-Pomorskie is the seventh province to be affected by ASF in pigs this year. The largest number of outbreaks (22) were confirmed in Wielkopolska, the disease also occurred in the Lublin, Masovian, Warmian-Masurian, Pomeranian and West Pomeranian provinces. In total, ASF has been confirmed in 36 pig herds since the beginning of the year.
