Farmers fear that the June heat will negatively affect the harvest

Крестьяне опасаются, что июньская жара негативно повлияет на урожай

The hot weather that settled in Latvia at the beginning of summer and returned again after Ligo does not please the peasants. But at least the haymaking will be successful, said member of the board of the Peasant Seimas Martins Trons in the Latvian Radio 4 “Dome Square” program, reports Rus.Lsm.lv. Latvian farmers do not yet have a consensus on what the harvest will be like. “It’s difficult to say what the situation will be when it’s time to harvest (for example, grain will begin to be harvested on the 20th of July). I’ve traveled around Latvia – the situation is different everywhere. There are fields where nothing has grown at all.” According to Mārtiņš Trons, the current weather conditions are definitely good for hay harvesting. This means there will be feed for livestock. Latvian grass seeds are in great demand on the international market. Winter crops tolerate hot weather better, and recently many Latvian farmers have switched their focus to them. However, it is not always possible to plant winter crops everywhere and not always. According to EU requirements, farmers need to grow 3 or 4 different crops to receive funding. According to the expert, one of the results of global warming is that in Latvia they are now increasingly growing crops that are not so typical for our latitudes – beans, soybeans, and corn.
