The police have determined that a 64-year-old resident of the Somianka commune in the Wyszków district in Mazovia had been stealing electricity for several months. Investigators are now determining the value of the losses incurred by energy companies. The owner will appear in court for the crime of stealing electricity.
Camouflaged connection
According to the District Police Headquarters in Wyszków, the owner of the farm threw wires on a low-voltage line that runs along the street, right next to his house. He used a tree growing on the border of the plot, whose leaves well concealed the illegal connection. Then he drew electricity bypassing the meter.
"The illegal electrical installation has already been removed, and the police are investigating all the circumstances of the case. During questioning, the 64-year-old admitted to the theft, and investigators are now determining the value of the losses incurred," we read in the statement.
Harsh consequences
Theft of electricity is a crime punishable by up to 5 years in prison. The perpetrator must also expect to pay fees charged by the electricity supplier for the illegal consumption of electricity.
"Illegal connections pose a threat to the safety of people living in a given building. In many cases, electricity theft is associated with damage to the electrical installation. This, in turn, is a frequent cause of fires or electric shocks not only to people illegally using electricity, but also to people living in the vicinity." – the Police warns on the occasion.
