Avon: The Story of a Cosmetics Empire
Avon was founded in 1886 in New York as the California Perfume Company. The founder of the company was David McConell – a traveling book salesman. He included perfume samples with the books and it turned out that women were more interested in cosmetic samples. Since 1939 the company has been operating under the name Avon Products ins. In 1959 the first European offices were established in Germany and Great Britain.
The first Avon consultant hired by David Mc Connell was Albee from Winchester. She delivered cosmetics to customers by direct selling. Avon was one of the first companies to offer women the opportunity to earn money through direct selling.
In 2005, a modern World Research and Development Center with an area of over 20,000 square meters was established in Suffern, New York. A team of specialists from various fields such as biologists, chemists, pharmacologists employed there develop formulas in their laboratories. Today, Avon is a global cosmetics concern.
6 million consultants selling cosmetics
Avon currently operates in over 135 countries around the world, and its products are distributed through almost 6 million representatives.
Avon Bankruptcy Filing
Recently, the world's media reported that on August 12, a bankruptcy petition was filed with a US court for the owner of Avon's businesses in Europe, the UK, and Latin America. The petition was filed by Avon Products Inc., a subsidiary of Natura & Co., which in 2020 bought Avon's business outside North America, i.e. in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
The decision follows a flood of lawsuits over talc used in Avon cosmetics, which was alleged to cause cancer.
Avon in Poland emphasizes that Avon Branches outside the United States operate independently of the case and without disruptions.
– At Avon, everything remains the same – we continue to implement our strategic initiatives while providing customers around the world with the same cosmetics offering they know and love – the Avon Cosmetics Poland press office reported.
