End of harvest in Greater Poland. Yields lower by 15-20 percent.

Koniec żniw w Wielkopolsce. Plony niższe o 15-20 proc.

According to reports, there may still be single plantations left to mow in some, especially northern regions, but generally the harvest is over in 2024. Therefore, the first conclusions can be drawn. These are not very optimistic.

Harvest 2024 in the Greater Poland Voivodeship

First of all, as they noted, this year's weather meant that the harvest began about two weeks earlier than last year. And they ended very quickly, because we are only in the first decade of August.
What about the crops? These are smaller than farmers themselves had previously estimated.

– In Greater Poland, they are lower by about 15 – 20 percent (and on weaker soils even more than 30%) compared to last year – reported the Greater Poland Chamber of Agriculture. As added, the prices of agricultural raw materials are also unsatisfactory.

– The prices received by farmers in purchasing stores do not cover the high production costs, especially of feed grains. Additionally, purchasing centers lower prices for contamination, half-grain grains, and sometimes they even do not accept them at all and send farmers back. In many cases, grain for consumption is classified as feed grain. Farmers report problems with straw – it is weak, breaks and there is much less of it than last year. Due to the price, farmers are refraining from selling, hoping that prices will eventually have to increase – reports WIR.

These data were confirmed by the editors of farmer.pl when collecting prices in purchasing stores. Indeed, as we learned, farmers have stored a lot of grain and are waiting for higher prices of agricultural produce. The supply of grain in purchasing centers is very low.

Harvest 2024 in Greater Poland

WIR provided detailed regional data from individual poviats of the voivodeship. They are collected from the heads of district offices of the Wielkopolska Chamber of Agriculture. Below we present some of them.

Gniezno County

– According to information obtained from farmers in the Gniezno district, the yield for each crop is lower than last year. Rye and barley plantations suffered the most after spring frosts. Due to weather turbulences, rapeseed lost a lot of yield (drought, spring frosts), while at that time the rapeseed was in the flowering phase, and the buds of the pods fell off due to frosts. As for yield, wheat yielded 5.5-6.5 t/ha, rapeseed 2.5-3.5 t/ha, rye 2-3.5 t/ha, barley 4-6 t/ha. Local purchases are open the price of the day applies: rapeseed – the price ranges from PLN 1,800 to PLN 1,950/t; triticale PLN 600-630/t; rye PLN 520-540/ton, barley PLN 560-600/ton – reports WIR.

Kalisz County

– Harvest work has ended in the Kalisz district. This year's grain yields show significant variability depending on the location and weather conditions in individual regions of the district. In the Kalisz region, the average yield of rye is from 2 to 4 tons per hectare, triticale from 4 to 6 tons per hectare, wheat from 5 to 8 tons per hectare, oats from 2 to 4 tons per hectare. The current grain purchase prices are as follows: barley: PLN 680-720 per tonne, rye PLN 400-500 per tonne, triticale PLN 600-800 per tonne, wheat PLN 700-850 per tonne, oats PLN 500-600 per tonne. Yields, according to information collected from local farmers, are lower than last year, which is caused by unfavorable weather conditions, which is especially visible on weaker soils. Farmers indicate that weather conditions have affected straw, there is less of it and of lower quality, and straw prices are the highest compared to other years. There are also signals that farmers are reluctant to sell grain at current prices, which is why many of them decide to store it. Cereals are sold mainly by producers who do not have adequate storage space and need financial resources. Farmers are preparing for the harvest festival, but their conversations show that due to the difficult situation in agriculture, they are not happy about it and do not see a future for themselves – we read on the website of the Wielkopolska Chamber of Agriculture.

Września County

– This year's harvest is assessed by farmers in the Września district as good, the yields due to drought and spring frosts are varied and strongly depend on the class of land, rainfall and range in the case of rapeseed 2.5-4.5 t/ha, barley 4-8 t/ha , as for wheat from 5-9 t/ha, where higher yields resulted in poorer quality (less protein and gluten), which is associated with an increased amount of feed wheat. Farmers have noticed that despite this year's capricious weather, no-plough cultivation has proven to be very successful, with higher yields. The purchasing price is: wheat PLN 800-850/t; rye PLN 500-540/t; rapeseed PLN 1,900-2,000/t; triticale PLN 620-650/t – reports WIR.

Złotów County

– The harvest in the Złotów district is nearing its end and, according to a survey conducted among farmers, 95% of the crops have been harvested. There are still peas and small fields of cereals during harvest. Yields are lower than last year. Wheat yielded 5 – 7 t/ha, winter barley and rye 4 – 4.5 t/ha, and rapeseed growers report yields of 2.5 – 3.5 t/ha. The quality of harvested grain and rapeseed varies depending on the quality of the soil and rainfall, but in general it can be considered that grain and rapeseed this year are characterized by fine grain. The weather was good, so the moisture content of the grain could be estimated at 14%. There is little traffic in the cluster. This is probably due to the low price offered by buyers. Currently, consumption wheat can be sold for PLN 800/t, feed wheat for PLN 740/t, rye for PLN 500/t, triticale and barley for PLN 600/t, oats for PLN 630/t, and rapeseed for PLN 1,900/t . However, farmers are cautious and wait for better economic conditions to sell, the Chamber informs.
