EC wants to limit antibiotics for animals. What does the ministry say about it?

KE chce ograniczenia antybiotyków dla zwierząt. Co na to ministerstwo?

The European Commission aims to limit antibiotic resistance and reduce the use of antibiotics for animals. The EC has stipulated that there should be a 50% reduction in antibiotic sales across the EU by 2030.

The Polish side has declared a 10% reduction in this indicator. As the ministry argues, this is a realistic indicator, and if more can be achieved, it will be a minor success.

The use of antibiotics in animals does not pose a risk to consumer health, as long as it is done in justified cases, i.e. when a diagnosis is made by a veterinarian and the withdrawal period is observed, emphasized Deputy Minister Jacek Czerniak.

According to the data, Poland ranks second in the EU in terms of antibiotics used in animal husbandry and breeding. We tell you why this is not true in the following text.

The following text is about why this is not true.

Poland at the top of countries using antibiotics in breeding. Or is it? Just where did such data come from?

The fact is, however, that the pressure from the European Commission to reduce the use of antibiotics is and will continue to increase. What measures has the ministry taken so far in this regard?

How does the ministry plan to limit antibiotics?

Veterinarians must be guided by the rules under the generally applicable EU regulations. For example, such products cannot be used routinely, they cannot be used to compensate for inadequate hygiene, improper animal husbandry, lack of care or inadequate farm management,” enumerated Jacek Czerniak, deputy minister of agriculture and rural development. –  Nor can they be used to promote growth or increase productivity, or prophylactically with certain exceptions, when the risk of spreading an infection or infectious disease in a group of animals is high and there are no appropriate solutions in this regard.

As the minister stressed, taking into account the risk of developing antimicrobial resistance and its consequences for human health, agricultural advisory centers conduct regular training for farmers on this very issue. A series of trainings for veterinarians on reducing antibiotic use in poultry, cattle pigs has also been implemented, and as of March 2024, within the framework of the animal welfare ecoscheme included in the CAP Strategic Plan 2023/2027, training of farmers on antibiotics  used in animal production is being carried out.

Is training and codes the right way to go?

Poland has also had a code of prudent use of antibiotics implemented by a resolution of the National Council of Veterinary Medicine for years, the minister stressed. –  The code emphasizes that limiting the use of antimicrobials including antibiotics in individual animal species can only be achieved through proper cooperation between the breeder and the veterinarian caring for the herd. This year, the Ministry of Agriculture Rural Development also conducted an information campaign on the Internet and social media targeting both breeders and the general public. This information campaign was conducted under the slogan “More does not mean healthier.” – he added.

The main goal of the campaign is to educate and build awareness about antibiotic resistance and to get the public interested in the dangers posed by the increasing incidence of this phenomenon. In Poland, official monitoring of antimicrobial resistance has also been carried out for years, in addition, the National Veterinary Institute continues the task of assessing the epidemiological situation. As part of this coordination, the National Institute of Public Health of the National Veterinary Institute has been designated by the Ministry of Health to develop a national strategy to combat antibiotic resistance.
