Imported Chinese electric cars will be subject to an additional duty of up to 38.1%, Reuters reports, citing a statement made by the European Commission on June 12. This will pose a barrier to cheaper car models that are becoming increasingly popular in Europe. The European Commission suggests that Chinese companies receive subsidies and are thus in a better position than competitors. European policymakers are keen to avoid a repeat of history with solar panels: ten years ago, the EU took only sporadic measures to limit Chinese imports. As a result, many European solar cell manufacturers went bankrupt. The amount of new duties will be set individually for each manufacturer.
