Lidl enjoyed a bumper quarter thanks to a surge in sales, while a weak performance at Asda sent its market share plummeting.
The latest data from Kantar shows Asda’s sales fell 5.6% in the 12 weeks to 1 September, with its market share dropping 1.2 percentage points to 12.6%.
While Lidl enjoyed a 9.1% boost in sales driven by digital vouchers for its bakery items that helped push its market share up to 8% in the period.
Ocado retained its title as the fastest growing grocer for the seventh consecutive month as it nabbed more market share over the period.
Sales jumped 12.9% in the quarter, pushing its hold on the market up 0.2 percentage points to 1.8%.

Kantar said grocery price inflation fell to 1.7% over the last four weeks, but its head of retail and consumer insight Fraser McKevitt warned “shoppers’ financial confidence hasn’t risen with it”.
“Memories of the last two years remain strong, with nearly 60% of shoppers still very or extremely concerned about rising grocery prices.
“This is their second biggest financial worry, only behind home energy bills. Retailers have been doing their bit to help shoppers keep the cost of the weekly shop down, and the proportion of sales on promotion increased year-on-year for the sixteenth month in a row in August.
“More than half of all grocery trips include some kind of deal, and this proportion rises as the trolley gets bigger.”
McKevitt added that retailers and brands will be looking ahead to see how the Chancellor’s upcoming Autumn Budget could impact household incomings and outgoings.
