The Ministry of Justice and Digital Technologies will stop translating laws into Russian in order to save money.
As Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs Liisa Pakosta said, this step will lead to cost savings without affecting the meaningfulness of the legal order and the ease of understanding of law enforcement.
“Only the texts of legal acts published in the Riigi Teataja in Estonian have legal force,” Pakosta said.
The Ministry of Justice has translated into Russian and is constantly updating about half of the current laws – about 200 in total. Until now, 12,900 euros per year were spent on updating the translations.
Laws already translated into Russian will continue to be available on the Jurist aitab (Lawyer Helps) portal in Riigi Teataja, but they will no longer be updated.
The Riigi Teataja also publishes English translations of laws and will continue to update them in a timely manner. The purpose of the English translations is to disseminate them outside Estonia to support international communication with our partners and foreign investors.
