Corn Harvest: North and East of the Country
Łukasz Mioduszewski from the Podlaskie Agricultural Advisory Centre estimates that silage corn harvests are halfway through the province. In the counties with greater water shortages (including the areas around Łomża and Kolno), farmers started mowing at the earliest, around August 20, and most silage corn has already been harvested in these areas. Locally, corn in the Podlaskie province has suffered greatly, and in extreme cases, farmers report silage corn yields reduced by as much as 50 percent compared to previous years. The plants have not yet reached maturity for grain harvest.
There is also talk of a decrease in silage corn yields in the Lublin province. Here, farmers started mowing silage corn on a larger scale in the last week of August. As Krzysztof Kurus from the Lublin ODR says, there were cases of sowing rapeseed after silage corn. Currently, silage harvests are already in their final stages. Plants are quickly disappearing from the fields due to the recent heat and water shortages, which are causing drying, especially of earlier varieties. Grain harvests have not started.
In the Pomeranian Voivodeship, the harvest of corn for silage started at the beginning of September on weaker soils and varieties with a lower FAO number; later varieties are still quite intensively green. Compared to the multi-year average, this is an earlier harvest by about 2 weeks. There is still a lot of time left until the grain is ready for harvest. According to Daniel Dąbrowski from the Pomeranian Agricultural Advisory Centre, despite local hail and frost damage, the growing season was quite favourable for plants and the yields should remain at a good level.

Corn Harvest: The Center of the Country
In the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, the silage corn harvest began around August 20 and is slowly coming to an end. As Dawid Skotnicki from KPODR points out, analyses of dry matter content indicate that this is the last call for silage harvest. The beginning of the grain corn harvest in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship is expected in around 10-14 days. Despite local problems with water availability on a voivodeship scale, the yields are assessed as satisfactory and better than in 2023.
In the Łódź province, farmers began harvesting corn for silage on a mass scale at the turn of August and September. As Katarzyna Bryk from ŁODR points out, plants lose water very quickly, which urges farmers. According to field reports, corn growers are not satisfied with this year's crops, which is related to the lack of rainfall during the plant's vegetation period. The start of grain harvest is expected within the next 3-4 weeks.
In the Wielkopolska province, the first attempts at mowing corn were made in the third decade of August, although farmers began harvesting on a larger scale in the last week of August and currently, depending on the location, the harvest is in full swing or will be completed in the coming days. As for the typical conditions for this province, corn developed well and farmers will not complain about a lack of feed. Depending on the earliness of the variety, the recent heat and lack of rainfall caused the plants to dry out very quickly. There are also reports from the area about the first attempts at mowing corn for grain in Wielkopolska.

Corn Harvest: West and South of the Country
As Justyna Klucznik-Demkiv from the Lubuskie Agricultural Advisory Centre informs, farmers in the western part of Poland started harvesting silage corn on a mass scale at the beginning of September. The first reports from the area indicate good prospects – due to rainfall during the growing season, silage corn crops are expected to be better than last year. Grain corn is waiting to reach maturity for harvest.
In the Opole and Lower Silesian provinces, silage corn began to disappear from the fields at the end of August. There are also reports from the area about the first attempts to harvest grain corn. Specialists from the Opole and Lower Silesian ODR indicate a varied condition of corn and expected harvests depending on local water availability during the vegetation period, but also frost damage. Compared to previous years, a drop in yield of several to 30 percent is expected.
In the southeastern corner of Poland, Michał Pakla from the Podkarpackie Agricultural Advisory Centre points out that the silage corn harvest will not be record-breaking, but at the same time there have been no drastic drops in yields. The corn harvest (for silage, but also with a large share for biogas) began about three weeks ago – the earliest north of Rzeszów, where the problems with water availability were greater. In these regions, farmers are "rushed" by the dry matter content, because in the recent heat, plants dry out quickly. The beginning of the grain corn harvest is estimated in about 3 weeks.
