In the coming month, the Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Authority will begin the first construction works to transform the territory of the former Liepājas metalurgs plant into a modern industrial park. Three tenders have already been concluded for the construction of the first section of new streets, and an agreement on the electrification of the territory has been approved. Based on the results of the tender, two construction projects will be carried out by A-Land for 1.85 million euros and SIA CTB for 2.8 million euros. The project includes the construction of utility networks (water supply, urban sewerage, storm sewerage, heating networks) on all three street sections. At the same time, the construction of power grids will be started, the work will be carried out by AS Sadales tīkls. The project will be implemented using 10 million euros from the Recovery and Sustainability Fund. The work is planned to be completed by December 31, 2025. The Liepaja Industrial Park is being developed by the Liepaja City Council and the FEZ Authority on the territory of the former Liepājas metalurgs plant between Brīvības, Meldru, Ezermalas, Parka and Zemnieku Streets. The area is planned to be transformed into a modern business environment. It is planned to attract technologically modern, innovative companies that will contribute to the development of high-added-value production. In total, it is planned to attract private investment in the amount of 275 million euros and create 1,500 new jobs. As reported in 2023, the Turkish-capital company Liepāja Steel decided to abandon its plans to restore metallurgical production in Liepaja. The investors will take the steelmaking furnace they bought three years ago to Turkey. As reported by LTV, the company does not hide its disappointment over the inability to find a common language with the Liepaja City Council and the Special Economic Zone (FEZ) Authority. Having failed to reach an understanding with officials, the investors were unable to agree on the start of industrial activity. Meanwhile, the Liepaja authorities are not backing down from their plan to create an "environmentally friendly industrial park" on the territory of the former Liepājas metalurgs plant. The entire territory of the former plant, about 120 hectares, belongs to the Liepaja FEZ and the local government. Five years ago, officials signed a letter of intent with the Ministry of Economy and the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) to develop a modern industrial park. The Liepājas metalurgs plant was declared insolvent in September 2016.
