In the Tunisian agricultural sector, the goal is to support approximately 1,000 people

Sumud (the Arabic word for "resilience") is a three-year initiative aimed at promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth in Tunisia, in particular in the provinces of Sfax, Mahdia, Siliana and Tozeur.

The project will help implement dynamic development plans for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), as well as social enterprises, in particular those run by young people, women and people with disabilities, in the agricultural, tourism and crafts sectors. In the agricultural sector, the aim is to support approximately 1,000 people from the most excluded Tunisian communities.

CNH and Oxfam Italy will provide financial, technical and training support to develop innovative crisis management strategies for these companies. This initiative is also supported by several Italian public and private bodies and Tunisian associations: Fondazione AVSI, Regione Toscana, SHANTI and APAD (Association for Sustainable Agriculture) and is co-financed by the Italian Development Cooperation Agency.

As a member of the Advisory Committee, the CNH representative will actively participate in the project selection phase of agricultural enterprises and then share his expertise and technology as well as training and coaching programs to support the development of participants and promote the socio-economic integration of young people and women.

Building an inclusive future, especially for women

Small and medium-sized enterprises in the agriculture, tourism and crafts sectors have been particularly hard hit by the ongoing political and economic crisis in Tunisia.

– Participation in the Sumud project reflects our commitment to building a more inclusive and prosperous future for all. By leveraging our expertise, technology and training opportunities to serve the most vulnerable communities, we can sustainably support the noble work of farmers to develop innovative strategies to strengthen their resilience, says Carlo Alberto Sisto, CNH President EMEA.

– Every day, in every country in the world, women face discrimination and inequality and constitute the majority of people living in poverty. We believe that there is no economic, social and environmental justice without equality. That's why, through our programs, we work to ensure that women and girls can defend their rights and build a better future for themselves. Thanks to CNH's contribution, through our Sumud project in Tunisia, we strive to make a positive difference in the lives of women agricultural entrepreneurs and local communities, adds Roberto Barbieri, Director General of Oxfam in Italy.

In South Africa, between 60,000 and 200,000 people make their living by collecting garbage

The Oxfarm Social Factory project is already being implemented in the South African city of Ekurhuleni, where in 2009 the humanitarian organization implemented a waste management program. The project focuses on cooperation between partners to develop skills and create new jobs in waste collection and integrate informal waste pickers into the municipal waste management system, in order to protect both people and the environment.

In South Africa, between 60,000 and 200,000 waste pickers – mostly women – carry out their work under very difficult conditions and with gender discrimination. The Social Factory project aims to directly help 1,200 people and improve the living conditions of over 300,000 people and households.
