Circle K, after long disputes with the Duma, refused to build a gas station in Daugavpils

Circle K после долгих споров с думой отказался строить автозаправку в Даугавпилсе

Circle K Latvia, after many years of disputes with the local government, withdrew its application for permission to build a gas station in Daugavpils at the address: Sports 8a, the Duma reported. Residents were against the new gas station. The message from the Daugavpils City Council states that “in a struggle that lasted three years, self-government and residents won” and a gas station with a car wash on Sporta Street, not far from the Daugavpils Olympic Center and the football stadium of the Children’s Sports School, will not be built . In the summer of 2022, a public discussion of this idea took place, in which more than 600 respondents took part. The project was opposed by both local residents and city institutions, including the Daugavpils Olympic Center and Daugavpils University. The construction department of the city planning and construction department, taking into account the potential danger of the site and the interests of adjacent property owners, decided to refuse Circle K to issue a building permit. The municipality confirmed this decision, but Circle K challenged it in court. The court ruled in favor of the businessman, obliging the local government to issue a construction permit. “Despite this, the local government continued to protect the interests of residents and, in the end, ensured that the application for a permit was withdrawn,” the Duma said. After much negotiation, litigation and controversy, Circle K abandoned the idea of building and withdrew its application to the Department of Urban Development. Circle K Latvia's turnover for the most recent financial year, which ran from 1 May 2022 to 30 April 2023, amounted to 622.612 million euros, up 35% from a year earlier, while the company's profit fell 13.7% to 7.833 million euros. Since the middle of last year, Circle K has had a unified management team in the Baltics. Circle K Latvia was registered in 1992, its share capital is 27.564 million euros. The company is owned by Norway-registered Circle K.
