From January to June 2024, the number of Chinese cars registered in Russia increased by 28%, to almost 1.9 million, which corresponds to 4% of the entire fleet, Kommersant reports.

A significant volume of registrations occurred in the last year and a half – after the departure of global brands and the restoration of the car market. Analysts point out that an unprecedented situation has now arisen when there are virtually no other foreign brands in sales of new cars, which allows Chinese brands to quickly increase their share.
As of July 1, the fleet of Chinese passenger cars in Russia reached 1.86 million vehicles, Avtostat estimated. Compared to the beginning of the year, the figure increased by 28.3%, or 0.41 million units.
In total, during this period, 0.71 million new cars were sold in the Russian Federation, excluding the market leader Lada – 0.51 million units. Only 0.42 million cars of Chinese brands were sold in six months, the agency reported. Thus, a small share of the Chinese car fleet is being eliminated.
The share of Chinese brands in the park over the past six months has increased from 3.1% to 4%, according to the agency’s data. The Autostat expert notes that if this trend continues within a couple of years, they will enter the top 5 of the market, taking the place of French (currently 6%) and American brands (7%).
The top 3 in terms of fleet volume coincides with the list of the best-selling models on the market – these are Chery (444.7 thousand units), Geely (341.1 thousand) and Haval (296 thousand units). These three brands account for about 60% of all registered Chinese cars in the country.
In 2023 alone, according to Autostat, almost 119 thousand Chery cars were sold in the Russian Federation, and another 71.4 thousand units were sold in the six months of this year. That is, about 42.8% of the brand’s fleet has been registered over the past year and a half. Similar volumes are shown by the other two brands: 111.7 thousand and 81.5 thousand units, respectively, for Haval, and 93.6 thousand and 69.1 thousand units for Geely.
