Cereal and rapeseed harvest estimates are lower, but so are the acreage. The Central Statistical Office released the data

Szacunki zbiorów zbóż i rzepaku niższe, ale areał też. GUS podał dane

Preliminary estimates by the Central Statistical Office show that the harvest of basic cereals with cereal mixtures will initially be lower by 4%. compared to the previous year. It was estimated at 25.6 million tons. In turn, the rapeseed harvest is expected to be 9% lower. and amount to approximately 3.4 million tons. Is this only the result of lower yields or maybe the area under cultivation of these species has also decreased? Details below.

What grain and rapeseed yields in 2024?

The harvest is not over yet, but the first estimates of this year's harvest of agricultural raw materials are already available. These are expected to be lower than in the previous season. What is the reason for this situation?

In the report of the Central Statistical Office we read that, firstly, these were frosts recorded in the second half of April (sometimes even below 9°C), which caused damage in some areas to some agricultural crops, as well as flowering fruit trees and shrubs and berry plantations. Secondly, there is a lack of rainfall in the second half of April and May, which causes excessive dryness of the soil in some areas and limits the production capacity of many crops, including cereals. Thirdly, extreme climatic phenomena occurring locally in June and July, i.e. storms, hailstorms and storms combined with strong winds.

What grain harvest will be in 2024?

The Central Statistical Office preliminary estimates that the area of cultivation of basic cereals and cereal mixtures in 2024 is approximately 2% smaller than last year and amounts to approximately 5.7 million hectares. Which does not have any impact on the amount of harvest.
Specifically, according to the Central Statistical Office, the acreage of individual cereal species is divided as follows:

  • wheat approx. 2.4 million ha;
  • rye approx. 0.7 million ha;
  • barley approx. 0.7 million ha;
  • oats over 0.5 million ha;
  • triticale approx. 1.2 million ha;
  • cereal mixtures approx. 0.3 million ha.

What about the crops?

– It is preliminary estimated that the yield of basic cereals with cereal mixtures will amount to 44.8 dt/ha, i.e. 0.8 dt/ha (2%) less than the yield from last year. Yields of winter cereals, including winter cereal mixtures, were initially estimated at 47.5 dt/ha, i.e. 1.3 dt/ha (3%) less than the yields of the previous year. Yields of spring cereals, including spring cereal mixtures, were initially estimated at 35.2 dt/ha, i.e. 1.2 dt/ha (3%) more than last year's crops. The harvest of basic cereals with cereal mixtures is estimated at 25.6 million tons, i.e. 0.9 million tons (4%) less compared to last year's harvest. The winter cereal harvest was initially estimated at 21.2 million tons, i.e. 1.1 million tons (5%) less than last year's harvest. The harvest of spring cereals, including spring cereal mixtures, was initially estimated at 4.4 million tonnes, i.e. 0.1 million tonnes (3%) more than the harvest from last year – we read in the announcement by the Central Statistical Office.

What rapeseed harvest will be in 2024?

Here, the Central Statistical Office estimates that the area under rapeseed and turnip rape cultivation this year has decreased by approximately 6% compared to last year and amounts to approximately 1.0 million ha. The rapeseed and turnip harvest was initially estimated at 3.4 million tons, i.e. approximately 9% less than last year's harvest.

The office also commented on the results of agricultural produce, the harvest of which is still a long time ahead of us.

In the case of potatoes, it was estimated that this year the area under cultivation of this species increased compared to last year and amounts to approximately 0.2 million ha. Later varieties have not yet accumulated yield and its amount will ultimately depend on weather conditions in the further growing season.

What about beetroot? – In the first half of July, the condition of the sugar beet plantation was good, and the dynamic vegetation promises high yields. However, the amount of sugar beet yields will depend on the further course of vegetation – it was reported.
