The best week in terms of turnover was the week right after the long weekend with Friday’s All Saints’ Day, ending with another extended weekend (with Monday’s Independence Day, when a significant part of the stores are closed).
Such an accumulation of free days is conducive to greater shopping – in small-format stores the largest number of customers was recorded precisely on Friday and Saturday, November 8 and 9. In November, the average number of packages in a shopping cart in small-format stores increased by as much as 4%, to 4 packages, while the average receipt value increased by as much as 11%, to PLN 26.82.
Sales decline in small stores
In November, small-format stores saw sales declines for another consecutive month in important categories for the format, such as beer (customers bought 3% fewer liters of beer than in November 2023), pure vodkas (down 5%), and cigarettes (sold 1% less than a year earlier).
According to CMR data, in November 2024. in small-format stores, customers also reached for disposable electronic cigarettes less frequently than a year ago (the number of receipts on which this category appeared decreased by 4%), while sales of electronic cigarette pods and liquids, as well as nicotine pouches, increased.
Similar to previous months, functional beverages (the number of receipts with this category was 24% higher than a year ago) and isotonic beverages (a 13% increase in the number of receipts) recorded large sales increases, but sales of energy drinks were slightly lower than a year ago (the number of transactions was down 4% compared to November 2023). Drinks, iced coffee and vegetable drinks, among others, were also among the product groups that appeared on receipts more often than 12 months ago. The number of receipts that featured flours, margarine, oils or sugar, among others, declined, as did the heavily priced butter.

Compared to October 2024, the total turnover of small-format stores fell by 9.4% in October, while the number of customers was 13% lower. However, it should be remembered that October is one day longer, there are no holidays on which most stores are closed, and the end of October (the days just before All Saints’ Day) is a time of increased shopping – which is why such a November sales decline is observed every year.
