From January to June this year, users actively used BLIK, making an above-average number of transactions. In the entire first half of the year, there were over 1.1 billion of them, of which over 601 million were made in the second quarter of 2024. During the analyzed period, Poles made an average of 6.1 million transactions per day. This means that between January and June this year, they made an average of 71 BLIK transactions per second.

The record daily number of transactions (completed in all channels – e-commerce, POS, ATM and P2P), which amounted to as much as 9.6 million, was recorded in the system on June 10, 2024. The average amount of BLIK transactions in the first half of 2024 was PLN 143. Meanwhile, the value of all operations completed using it from January to June this year reached PLN 157.8 billion, which is 46 percent more than a year earlier. In the second quarter of this year alone, users spent PLN 83.9 billion using BLIK.

BLIK unrivaled in e-commerce

BLIK is very frequently used by users in e-commerce. In the first half of 2024, every second transaction took place in this channel. Between January and June this year, consumers paid for online purchases 544.5 million times – which is 28 percent more than in the same period of 2023. In the discussed half-year, the value of online transactions reached PLN 79.1 billion, compared to PLN 56.6 billion a year earlier – which means an increase of 40 percent compared to the first six months of the previous year. The average value of a single online purchase was PLN 145.

The first half of 2024 brought a significant increase in the popularity of BLIK in various e-commerce categories. The value of transactions in financial services increased by 79%, and in fashion by 43%. The upward trend was maintained by marketplace platforms, recording a 39% increase in the value of transactions. The average shopping baskets in these categories amounted to PLN 268, PLN 233 and PLN 125, respectively.

– Looking at the development of e-commerce in Poland, it is hard not to notice how dynamically the importance of online payments is growing. We notice that more and more consumers from different age groups are discovering the advantages of solutions such as BLIK. We currently estimate that our market share is around 70%. With such dynamic growth and user trust, we see real opportunities to achieve an even greater share in the coming years. This is a challenge, but also a goal that we will certainly want to achieve – emphasizes Monika Król, vice president of Polski Standard Płatności, the operator of BLIK.

POS transactions are gaining importance

Between January and June this year, transactions in traditional payment terminals enjoyed growing popularity among BLIK users. During this period, Poles paid in this way 258 million times, which is 58 percent more than in the same period a year earlier. The average daily number of BLIK transactions at points of sale in the analyzed half-year amounted to 1.42 million, and the average amount of a single transaction was PLN 55. Interestingly, the largest number of BLIK transactions in payment terminals was recorded in the Mazowieckie province. Users were also eager to use this BLIK function in the Lower Silesia, Lesser Poland, Greater Poland and Łódź provinces.

BLIK contactless payments had a major impact on the development of this channel, as at the end of June this year they already accounted for over 40% of all POS operations. In the first half of this year, people using this service reached for it 108.2 million times. This is an increase of almost 90% year on year. Since the launch of BLIK contactless payments, they have been activated by almost 3.3 million users and paid in this way in 154 countries around the world. Apart from Poland, BLIK contactless was most frequently used in Germany, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain.

– Contactless payments, although a relatively new BLIK service, have quickly become a part of users’ everyday habits, both in Poland and when travelling abroad. As part of our long-term strategy aimed at expanding BLIK’s reach in Poland and abroad, we have started work on introducing this function also for iPhone owners. Opening the iOS platform to external suppliers is an important step that will allow us to offer BLIK to an even wider group of users and introduce services where they have not been available so far. Our assumption is for BLIK to work on as many devices as possible and be offered by more and more banks, which will allow users to use its functions without any restrictions – says Dariusz Mazurkiewicz, president of Polski Standard Płatności, the BLIK operator.

One and a half million transfers to the phone every day

Transfers to BLIK phones also continued to gain in importance. In the second quarter of this year, users ordered as many as 150.7 million such transactions, which is half as many as in the same period a year earlier. It is worth noting that P2P payments currently constitute over a quarter of all BLIK operations. Their value between April and June this year reached PLN 22 billion (65 percent more than a year earlier), while the average value of a transfer to a BLIK phone was PLN 153. In turn, in the half-year period, Poles settled in this way 282.7 million times. The value of all transfers to BLIK phones made by users in the first six months of this year amounted to PLN 41.2 billion, compared to PLN 24.1 billion in the first half of 2024.

In the first half of this year, there was also a stable increase in cash deposits and withdrawals at ATMs, which constitute 3% of all BLIK transactions. Poles used this function 34 million times (an increase of 18% h/h) – of which 30.1 million were withdrawals and 3.9 million were deposits. Importantly, in the case of ATM withdrawals, the highest average value of a single transaction was recorded – between January and June this year it amounted to PLN 690.

Nearly 3 million new users

At the end of June this year, 30.3 million mobile applications were already registered in the system, and almost 17 million users were actively using BLIK, which means an increase of 10 and 20 percent, respectively, compared to the previous year.

BLIK is a common standard for mobile payments. Virtually every customer of domestic payment institutions offering a mobile application currently has the option of using BLIK in mobile banking applications. The company Polski Standard Płatności (PSP) is responsible for the development of the system. The shareholders of PSP are: Alior Bank, Bank Millennium, Santander Bank Polska, ING Bank Śląski, mBank, PKO Bank Polski and Mastercard.
