The largest importers
According to the Austrian cattle breeders' association Rinderzucht Austria, in the first half of 2024 Austria exported its breeding cattle mainly to Turkey.
In absolute numbers, 8,500 head of breeding cattle were sold to Turkey during the reporting period, an increase of 5,100 head compared to the same period last year. Overall, sales of breeding cattle abroad increased by 10 percent to almost 17,000 head. Pregnant calves were the most frequently weaned.
The second most important importer of breeding cattle from Austria during the reporting period was Italy, where 3,000 animals were sold, accounting for 18 percent of the animals sold. Sales to Algeria fell sharply by 3,200 head.
Simmental exports dominate
According to Rinderzucht Austria, 85 percent of exported cattle are Simmental, 7 percent Brown Swiss and 5.6 percent Holstein. The association continues to see high demand for Austrian breeding cattle, both domestically and internationally.
