The approximately 546,400 dairy cows farmed in Austria (+0.5%) produced approximately 3,981,800 tonnes of raw milk in 2023. This corresponds to an average annual milk production of 7,300 kg per animal (+0.5%). Almost 89 percent of raw milk produced went to dairies and processing plants (3,534,600 t; +1.0%).

Apart from a small amount of waste, the remaining raw milk was used on the farms themselves. 260,500 tonnes (6.5% of total production) were used as feed for calves, livestock and pets, and 146,800 tonnes (3.7% of production) were used raw or processed as food on or off farm .

Goat and sheep milk

In 2023, 40,600 dairy goats (+0.7%) produced approximately 26,600 tons of raw milk (+2.1%). The average annual milk production per animal was 656 kg (+1.4%). The majority of goat milk production, 87.9%, or 23,400 tons, was also intended for food purposes. The remaining amount, after deducting losses, was used for animal feed or other purposes (3,000 tons, or 11.1% of production).

In 2023, approximately 27,800 dairy sheep were kept (-2.8%). With an average annual milk yield of 415 kg per animal (+1.7%), a total of approximately 11,500 tonnes of raw milk was produced (-1.3%). 9,900 tons, or 85.9%, were used to feed people. total production. 1,500 tons (13.1% of production) were used for other purposes, including: feed. The remaining amount (1.0%) was recognized as a loss.
