Protection of animals and wildlife
In Austria a citizen initiative “In favor of federal hunting law” demands a fundamental reform of hunting law in the direction of protection of animals and wildlife. Currently seeks supporters of this initiative. Initiators appeal among others. to stop hunting in floodprone areas, with special attention to protection of the European hare.
In this year the situation has further deteriorated due to the effects of flooding. As a result of the flood, many animals died, which further more worsened and the situation already stressed – explained the referendum spokesman, Rudolf Winkelmayer. In concerning the current situation, the initiative calls for suspension of hunting in this year.
Population of hareholders is declining
Winkelmayer considers, that the population of hareholders in Europe has been declining for decades. He believes the cause of the population decline is intensive agriculture, use of chemicals, loss and fragmentation of habitats and increased road traffic.
Despite the rapid decline in the population of this species in the last decades, each year in Austria slaughters over 100 000 bears, primarily in hunting. also hunting these hunts pollute the environment with toxic hallow.
14 principles of federal hunting
Principles have been formulated 14 which are to be included in federal hunting law. One of the requirements is the division of animal species in three levels of management, according to clear criteria: use, development and management conservation. If hunting is necessary because of the management of forests or biological diversity, hunting plans must be drawn on based on solid basis, taking into conservation and protection of biological diversity in ecosystem.
It is also required to stage completion by
2030 year. winter feeding of wild animals, mandatory in some union countries. The weighting of animals should
be adapted to a habitat. Also the referendum expressly calls for the use of ammunition to
stop.
