ASF control in Saxony brings results

Kontrola ASF w Saksonii przynosi efekty

As announced in a press release by the Saxon Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Cohesion (SMS), a large part of the ASF exclusion zones in Saxony have been abolished. The European Commission has approved the corresponding application by the state of Saxony, supported by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Exclusion Zone II in the Meißen district has been completely abolished

The districts of North Saxony and Central Saxony, parts of the Meißen district west of the A 13 motorway and parts of Dresden west of the B 170 and south of the B 6 are now free of ASF again. Exclusion zone II in the Meißen district has been completely lifted. The reason for lifting the lockdowns was the infection rate in the Meißen district in 2021-2023. All cases of ASF in wild boars and wild boar carcasses identified in this district occurred more than a year ago and are therefore no longer considered active. The first case of ASF in the Meißen district was detected on 13 October 2021. A total of 109 cases of ASF have been recorded in the district. The last one was confirmed on 23 June 2023 in a stream in the municipality of Weinböhla.

Problems still occur along the border in the counties of Bautzen and Görlitz

From now on, exclusion zone II (risk area) extends exclusively to the north of the districts of Bautzen and Görlitz and runs along the border with Poland in the east and south of the district of Görlitz. It borders on the A4 motorway and federal road 178 to the south and ends in Zittau. A buffer zone, known as exclusion zone I, surrounds this exclusion zone II at a short distance. It includes the remaining parts of the districts of Görlitz and Bautzen, the part of the district of Meißen east of the A 13 motorway and the eastern districts of Dresden. B 170 and north of B 6, including Dresden Heath.

The epidemiological pressure from Poland is high

Despite the lifting of all disease control measures in the district of Meißen, complete approval cannot be given for the districts of Bautzen and Görlitz. New cases of ASF are currently being detected in the north of Bautzen. The last cases were detected in the north of Görlitz in June 2024. In addition, this district is still at risk of an epidemic in the neighbouring areas of Poland and the Czech Republic. Intensive monitoring of the health status of the wild boar population in the exclusion zones is therefore necessary. Findings of dead animals must continue to be reported to the relevant food and veterinary authorities in the districts. Fences to deter game and limit ASF will remain in the exclusion zones. This applies in particular to the so-called Eastern Protection Corridor along the border with Poland.
