Asda names ex-Tesco director as interim online boss

Asda has appointed former Tesco director Barney Burgess as interim vice president of online while it waits for David Devany to join the business next year.

Burgess will lead Asda.com, George.com and online operations teams with immediate effect, reporting into chief digital officer Matt Kelleher, Retail Week reported.

He will remain in place until David Devany joins the supermarket chain from Iceland in 2025 and becomes the permanent vice president of online.

Burgess brings over 25 years of retail, consumer and financial services experience. He worked for Tesco between 2007 and 2014 in its grocery home shopping business, during which he helped to launch the supermarket giant’s click and collect service.

He has also worked at consultancy firm McKinsey, where he advised online grocery businesses on their operational strategies.

Burgess’ appointment comes as Iceland’s group buying director Andrew Staniland has ditched his impending move to Asda to join Morrisons instead.

Staniland, who was originally scheduled to start in a VP role at the supermarket chain in March, will now take on the position of group trading director and executive committee member at Morrisons in February.
