- Winter barley yielded poorly or averagely in 2024. Rarely did farmers get good yields of this species.
- Many experts believe that the biggest problems this season were: high pressure of cereal viruses, spring frosts and water shortage.
Low yield of winter barley
In 2024, the winter barley yield was disappointing. Very often, only a few tons per hectare were heard. Barley had its own specific problems this season. First of all, there was often talk about the high probability of plants being infected with viruses, especially with the barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV). But there were more factors contributing to low yields. Their multitude and scale meant that the barley yield was severely limited. We wrote about this topic some time ago.

Winter barley – regional list
However, there is a new season ahead of us and it is worth transferring the experience to new crops, because to some extent this year's mistakes could have been avoided. First of all, looking at the degree of virus infection in cereals, it is worth keeping an eye on the attacks of aphids – virus vectors – this year. They appear already during the barley pinning period and from that moment on they can infect cereals. Aphids may invade plantations successively, but the most important thing is to fight the so-called migrant women, i.e. founders of the colony. They most often appear on warm, sunny and windless days.

Part of the barley plantation closed down
This year, the LOZ 2024 list includes 22 varieties of winter barley. Most recommendations are new referrals. Most varieties appear on regional lists developed for the following voivodeships: Silesia (9 recommendations), Łódź Province (8), and Lower Silesia (8). The Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship has not yet had such a list. If there are no varieties on the list, COBORU recommends varieties from neighboring voivodeships, which should also work well due to similar climatic conditions. The most frequently recommended variety for sowing in 2024 is the Jakubus variety (recommended in 14 voivodeships) as well as KWS Morris (8) and SU Midnight (8).
