AO invests £2m into delivery fleet to reduce carbon emissions

AO has invested more than £2m into its delivery fleet, as it seeks to drive down carbon emissions.

The electricals retailer is transitioning its tractor units from diesel to compressed natural gas (CNG), with aims to have 90% of its vehicles running on the fuel by 2030.

AO initially bought 10 CNG tractor units in 2022, and has now introduced a further 10 into its fleet.

The switch will enable a reduction of up to 85% in carbon dioxide emissions compared to its existing diesel vehicles, according to the retailer.

Alongside the tractor units, the firm has purchased 20 longer moving double deck semi-trailers (LSTs) from Chesire business Tiger Trailers.

Measuring 2.05m longer than the standard trailers used by AO, these allow for a 10% rise in capacity as appliances can be double stacked on both its lower and upper decks, as well as loaded four products wide.

AO group logistics director David Ashwell said: “We are proud to be continuing our move to a more sustainable future that will hopefully see 90% of our fleet running on CNG by 2030.

“These tractor units and the new LSTs allow us to reduce our carbon footprint and save on costs. Crucially it significantly increases our capacity, which enables us to deliver even better service to our customers.”
