Aldi opens second compact city store in Brussels

Aldi is planning a second store in Brussels that follows its compact city store concept. The opening is part of the discounter’s offensive in the “important region” it calls Brussels.

Brussels offensive

Next summer, Aldi will open a third outlet of its compact city store format, which was trialled in Brussels in 2022. One year later, a second location opened in the centre of Antwerp. However, the new store will be significantly bigger than its two cousins, with a retail area of 735 sqm – compared to 600 sqm and even barely 374 sqm for the Antwerp store.

A clever shop layout allows the retailer to offer its full range on a smaller-than-usual area. Wall-mounted deep freezers, for example, take up less space than usual ones. Moreover, the width of shopping aisles and shopping trolleys are adjusted, without compromising the shoppers’ comfort.

Brussels is an important region for the discounter, where it also just reopened its shop in Auderghem and will soon open a new shop in Schaarbeek. In recent months, several Brussels shops have been given a new shop layout that pushes the fresh produce offering to the forefront.
