Adidas removes model from ad. Politics in the background

During the Munich Games, 11 Israeli athletes were taken hostage and murdered by the Palestinian terrorist group known as "Black September".

The controversy concerned the choice of model Bella Hadid by Adidas, a German sportswear company, as the heroine of the campaign. Hadid, born in 1996, is Palestinian-American and is an advocate for efforts to help Palestinians.

Adidas' decision to remove Hadid's posts from social media was met with criticism from pro-Palestinian voices for silencing people of Palestinian origin and "wanting revenge" against Hadid because of her heritage.

"We are aware of the connections to tragic historical events – although they are completely unintentional – and we apologize for any upset or distress this has caused," an Adidas spokesman said in a statement sent to CNN on Friday.

"As a result, we are changing the remainder of the campaign. We believe in sport as a unifying force around the world and will continue our efforts to support diversity and equality in everything we do," the company added.

Hadid, whose father is Palestinian-American developer Mohamed Hadid, has often spoken out about violence against Palestinians and the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.
