According to Agrarheute, the accident occurred last weekend on a corn plantation in Perl, in the Merzig-Wadern district in Saarland. A woman and her dog were trapped in the header of a forage harvester.
According to police, the woman was walking her four-legged pet. The loose animal, upon seeing a forage harvester working in the field, began to bark and ran into the corn towards the machine. The owner ran after it. While trying to save the dog, she was hit by the combine harvester's header. The forage harvester operator immediately stopped the machine, but the woman had already fallen into the cutting mechanism.
Both the dog and its 64-year-old owner suffered serious injuries. A vet had to put the mauled animal to sleep. The woman was taken to hospital. Her condition was described as stable, but her injuries were serious.
