A forty-year-old man stole beehives. He caught it thanks to GPS

Czterdziestolatek ukradł ule. Wpadł dzięki GPS

The theft took place on the night from Wednesday to Thursday. Then, police officers from Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski received a report about a white bus that was supposed to be transporting five bee families robbed in Stalowa Wola.

The perpetrator was located thanks to a GPS locator that a prudent beekeeper placed in one of the hives. Thanks to this, he could provide police officers with precise coordinates of the vehicle's location. Ultimately, the driver was detained on national road No. 9 near the town of Rudka.

As it turned out, the vehicle was driven by a 40-year-old resident of the Starachowice district. His explanations that he was transporting the hives with the knowledge and consent of the beekeeper were in vain. The hives with bees have already been returned to the owner, and the thief who stole from other people's families now faces up to five years in prison

Theft of bee colonies has been a real plague in recent years. Particularly at risk are apiaries located far from human settlements or bee stumps taken away for public consumption and placed in secluded places (e.g. in fields). For this reason, more and more beekeepers protect themselves by using camera traps or, as in the above example, GPS transmitters.
