67 companies in Latvia continue to transport food products from Russia

In the first half of this year, 67 enterprises imported food and feed into Latvia from Russia, and 36 enterprises from Belarus, the Food and Veterinary Service (PVS) found out. At border control points, 63 Latvian enterprises were indicated as the destination for food shipments and feed from Russia, and 39 Latvian enterprises for shipments from Belarus. Compared to 2022, the number of enterprises importing food and feed from Belarus this year decreased by 36%, and from Russia by 55%, the service noted. The service did not answer the question about which companies imported food and feed from these countries to Latvia. According to the PVS, in the first six months of this year, 891,776 tons of food and feed were imported into Latvia from Russia and 311,896 tons from Belarus. Thus, the total amount of food and feed imported into Latvia from both countries reached 1.204 million tons. In the first half of this year, mainly food industry residues, waste and ready-made animal feed were imported into Latvia from Russia. Of the 587,611 tons of these products, 586,357 tons were imported into Latvia, and 1,253 tons into another European Union (EU) country. This is followed by grain products imported from Russia, the total volume of which in Latvia in the first half of 2024 amounted to 188,162 tons. Of these, Latvia is listed as a border control destination for 117,569 tons, and another EU country for 70,593 tons. Vegetables and root crops were imported into Latvia from Russia in the first six months of this year in the amount of 46,861 tons, of which 41,581 tons were destined for Latvia and 5,280 tons for another EU country. Imports of food and feed from Belarus are also dominated by food industry residues, waste and finished animal feed, of which 215,147 tons were imported into Latvia in the first half of the year. Of these, 213,935 tons were destined for Latvia, and 1,212 tons for another EU country. In addition, 42,886 tons of sugar and sugar-confectionery products were imported into Latvia, with the entire volume destined for Latvia. This is followed by animal, vegetable or microbial fats, oils and their breakdown products, finished edible fats, which in the first half of the year were imported to Latvia from Belarus in the amount of 42,399 tons, of which 42,240 tons were sent to Latvia, and 159 tons to other EU countries.
