12 retailers on store expansion sprees in 2025

12 retailers on store expansion sprees in 2025

The UK’s retail scene is set to welcome a host of new stores this year, including Ikea’s long awaited Oxford Street flagship.

While some brands such as HMV and The Entertainer have placed expansion plans on pause as they deal with the fallout from the Budget, some are racing ahead with a raft of new shops. Retail Gazette takes a look at the retailers opening stores in 2025.

The Range

The Range

The Range is ramping up its expansion plans this year as it looks to open 10 new superstores each month in 2025.

The discount giant chain is in the process of converting up to 70 former Homebase units after it acquired the stores’ leaseholds along with the DIY chain’s brand in November last year.

It is set to open nine of its new-format superstores this month, which will include The Range’s full lines as well as its ‘Garden Centres by Homebase’ concept.

Alex Simpkin, chief executive of The Range, Homebase and Wilko owner CDS Superstores said: “While those Homebase stores acquired by CDS will continue to trade as they are during the transition period, we’re focused on ensuring a seamless transfer of these locations into our new store format, with six launches now confirmed for January 2025 already.”

Co-op

Co-op supplied

Co-op kickstarted the year by unveiling plans to open 75 new stores this year as it eyes further convenience growth.

These will consist of up to 25 new Co-op operated locations, with the first set of stores launching in early 2025 and which will include added services including parcel collection and returns, as well as payment services. They will also operate as a hub for Co-op’s online quick commerce operation.

A further 50 additional branches are also expected to open as franchise stores this year.

The supermarket chain will also refurbish 80 existing stores this year. Some of the stores that are set for a re-launch following major makeovers in early 2025 include those in Exeter, Brighton, Bristol, Cambridgeshire, Hampshire, Avonmouth, Hereford and Clapham.

Holland & Barrett

Holland & BarrettHolland & Barrett is looking to bolster its store portfolio with an extra 50 locations this year, including standalone stores, new formats and in-store concessions with its retail partners.

It comes as the health and wellness retailer spent £70m in 2024, refurbishing 280 stores and opening 35 new sites, including expanding its shop in shops at Tesco and partnering with Next for the first time.

Holland & Barrett property and format director Nick Gerrard told The Grocer last year that the business was in talks with new partners about expanding its concessions network, particularly on sites located on retail parks such as supermarkets.

“There are some undeniable facts, we want Holland & Barrett to be accessible,” he explained.

“We’ve only got 19 standalone sites on retail parks, because generally the size of boxes available to us are too big. However, there’s partners in those retail parks, be that Tesco or Next or whoever, who actually have spare space and want to make their offer more interesting to the customers that shop with them.”

Waterstones

Waterstones hires Farfetch finance exec as new CFO

Waterstones is planning to open at least a dozen new bookshops this year as it capitalises on the growing demand for books.

The bookseller’s chief executive James Daunt told The Financial Times that the business had opened 12 new stores in the UK last year and is looking to “do that or more in 2025”.

B&Q

B&Q

DIY giant B&Q is also expanding its footprint in 2025 as it continues the rollout of its Local format.

The retailer opened its first small format shop outside of London along Brighton’s North Street last year after finding success with the concept from a handful of stores inside the capital.

B&Q will also open new superstores across the UK and Republic of Ireland after snapping up eight ex-Homebase stores worth £5.7m in the last month.

Chief executive Graham Bell said: “We look forward to swiftly concluding these purchases and converting the stores to the B&Q brand and offer, and to welcoming our new customers to the stores and new colleagues to the B&Q family.”

Aldi

AldiAldi is investing £650m into its store estate this year as it aim to open 1,500 supermarkets across the UK.

The discounter is targeting around 30 new locations in 2025, including in Fulham Broadway in London, Billericay in Essex, and Cheadle in Stoke-on-Trent.

Aldi will also open three new Scottish supermarkets in Arbroath, Baillieston and Kirkintilloch as part of a £40m investment over the next two years.

The retailer spent £800m in expanding its UK footprint in 2024.

Lidl

LidlLidl is inching closer to its target of 1,100 stores by the end of 2025.

The discounter is kickstarting the year with eight new supermarkets, followed by around 40 more in the next financial year.

The retailer exchanged on a £70m sale and leaseback deal in October, which includes 12 new stores in locations such as Crediton, Manchester, and Saffron Walden.

Its expansion has helped Lidl to grow its market share, which Kantar reported grew 0.3 percentage points in the 12 weeks to 29 December as Christmas sales exceeded £1bn for the first time.

Gymshark

Gymshark is set to open its first permanent store outside the UK this year inside UAE's Dubai Mall.

Gymshark is continuing with its brick-and-mortar expansion this year with three permanent stores in the pipeline for 2025.

The first of the planned openings will be a 9,000 sq ft site at Westfield White City, joining the brand’s existing stores on Regent Street and Westfield Stratford City.

The gymwear giant will follow it up with its first standalone store in the north at Manchester’s The Trafford Centre in the summer.

The 7,500 sq ft store will be located on Upper Peel Avenue and will house its most sought-after ranges, plus exclusives to Gymshark Trafford Centre.

The business will also open its first store in mainland Europe on The Kalverstraat in Amsterdam during the year.

Jo Malone

Jo Malone London

Jo Malone is eyeing up eight new stores this year as it targets market towns.

The fragrance brand is looking to increase its store portfolio from 37 to 45 by the middle of 2025 in places such as Wilmslow, Farnham, Market Harborough, Leamington Spa and Chichester.

Jo Malone senior vice-president and global general manager Jo Dancey told The Financial Times: “People are more local than they’ve ever been before, and that is something that we’re tapping into. We’re also going to spaces where there isn’t necessarily another retailer.”

Sephora

Sephora is continuing its flurry of UK store openings with its seventh store set to open this winter in Kent's Bluewater Shopping centre.

Sephora has set its sight on 20 stores around the UK as it finished 2024 with seven locations nationwide.

CEO Guillaume Motte told The Times in November that he wanted to double the brand’s footprint to “at least 20” over the next two to three years.

The beauty specialist is kicking off its 2025 expansion plans with a 6,727 sq ft store in Liverpool One.

Sephora relaunched in the UK in 2022 and opened in Westfield White City a year later, having previously exited the UK market in 2005.

It currently has stores in London’s Stratford City, Manchester’s The Trafford Centre, Metrocentre and Eldon Square in Newcastle, Bluewater in Kent, as well as Birmingham Bullring.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury's

After enjoying its “biggest-ever” Christmas, Sainsbury’s is ramping up its expansion plans to include up to 20 new superstores and at least 25 Local convenience shops over the next 12 to 15 months.

The first set of new supermarkets will open in the first quarter of the new financial year.

Chief executive Simon Roberts said: “This Christmas, five consecutive Christmases, we’ve taken market share. Customers [are] really buying into our combination of value, quality and service but in reality, there are too many parts of the UK where customers can’t get to a Sainsbury’s.

“We acquired a number of stores from Homebase and Co-Op last year. They’ll open over the next 12 months, in addition to our pipeline of new supermarkets that we will open anyway.”

B&M

B&M

Discount chain B&M is continuing with its expansion plans across the UK as it targets another 45 stores.

The retailer said it was on track to open 45 stores openings in the current financial year, which runs until 29 March, and has another 45 planned in its next financial year.

B&M, which is aiming for 1,200 outlets in the UK, said in November it had successfully converted 44 of the 52 former Wilko units it acquired when the chain fell into administration in August 2023. It currently has 772 stores across the UK.
